Artists Collaborative Theatre 2009-2010 Season
After such a glorious inaugural season in the new black box theatre in Elkhorn City, Artists Collaborative Theatre, Inc. is excited to announce the season schedule for 2009-2010! The lineup looks to be packed with wonder, imagination and the magic of theatre. The season features real life lessons, laughs, and love while we journey from a small town in Indiana to somewhere over the rainbow. We will revisit the Little Women of the Civil War for a limited engagement before we take that beloved production on the road to the Kentucky Theatre Association Festival. ACT will do double duty with two Christmas productions sure to please every age. Watch our ACT Kids grow up through this ACT tradition of Best Christmas Pageant Ever as well as the regional premiere of Appalachian writer Silas House’s play about the yearning of being home for Christmas in the mountains. We then travel through the magic of a young girl’s imagination beyond Kansas into a classic for all ages to enjoy. ACT is proud to announce we will be revisiting a name from our past as we welcome the writing of Michael Odom, son of Dr. Odom. Then the laughs and love will take us right into Truvy’s beauty shop as we see just how funny and strong the women of Steel Magnolias are and much like our women of east Kentucky. Our season runs from September through July and one day into August. You can check in on our website anytime for updates, find us on Facebook, or call the theatre office.
2009-2010 Mainstage Season & Synopses
And They Dance Real Slow in Jackson by Jim Leonard
Sept 24 – Oct 18
In Jackson, a small town in rural Indiana, Elizabeth Ann Willow lives with her father and mother. Crippled as a baby with polio, Elizabeth Ann is confined to a wheelchair and must wear leg braces, which cuts her off from the other children and prevents her regular attendance at school. The play is a moving and poetically evocative plea for understanding and compassion in a world where prejudice and casual cruelty are too often the norm. “Powerful!”
Little Women by Paulette Laufer

ACT Theatre will be restaging last year’s hit in preparation to attend Kentucky Theatre Association’s Competition. Make plans to see the wonderful cast revisit Elkhorn City on their way to Morehead State University. Don’t Miss it!
The Hurting Part by Silas House

Set during Christmas 1962, “The Hurting Part” centers around a rural Southern family who has been forced to move north to find work. Battling homesickness, painful memories, and pride, the main characters look back over their past in their struggle to get back home. With Bluegrass music by local musicians, innovative storytelling devices, and a compelling story, “The Hurting Part” is sure to become a Christmas classic.

There is a new-found feeling between the two and they both must make a life-changing decision regarding the sale of the family property. THE MAGIC WELL has been produced in Gulfport Mississippi and during the Mississippi Theatre Conference.
Steel Magnolias by Robert Harling
July8 – Aug 1
If you loved last summer’s hit, Dearly Departed, this one is sure to please! The action is set in Truvy's beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are "anybody" come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle, the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town's rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M'Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby, is about to marry a "good ole boy." Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions. The ladies soon learn their underlying strength—and love are the special qualities that make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.
